This 1 Day Kampala Cultural Tour starts early in the morning after your breakfast driving to Wamala Tombs 13 km north of Kampala city. Wamala is the sacred burial place of Kabaka Suuna II (1836-1856) the 29th King of Buganda, he had 148 wives and 218 children. Kabaka Suuna was the last King to be buried in his own palace and the last to have his jawbone removed after death. He was also the first King to admit traders into Buganda. A magical but almost forgotten place, where the first Arab traders first come to Buganda in 1844.

Wamala Tombs

Later drive back to Kampala, and have your next stop at the Kasubi tombs, situated on Kasubi Hill. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was established in 1880, where royals of the Buganda kingdom are buried, it’s a burial ground for the four kings ‘Kabakas’ of Buganda, This is an important centre for the royal family, a place where the Kabaka and his representatives frequently carry out important rituals related to Buganda culture.

Kasubi Tombs

After proceeding to the Buganda Kingdom parliament at Bulange Mengo and the king’s palace at Lubiri driving through the Nantaweta Royal mile Junction (a monument in the form of a split drum) in the middle of the stretch from Bulange Mengo headquarters of  Buganda Parliament and the Lubiri Palace. This stretch is also known as the royal mile.
There is a ‘drive-through gate’ only used by the King of Buganda. Along this Mile are Buganda’s cultural Totems and norms that have been displayed along the Mile that you can learn about. The Royal Mile connects the King’s Palace to Buganda Parliament by a straight road measuring exactly a mile. While at the King’s Palace, you will find out why it was once used as a military barracks. Buganda is an ancient traditional kingdom in eastern and central Africa and is one of the most powerful kingdoms in pre-colonial Africa. At Lubiri you get a chance to see the late president did Amin’s prison and information about Amin’s torture chambers. The King’s Palace Lubiri was built in 1922.
The building was duly converted to army barracks, while an adjacent site became a notorious underground prison and torture-execution chamber built by Idi Amin in the 1970s. At the gate of this palace is a traditional fire source that has never burnt out since the inception of the Buganda monarchy / Kingdom and shall never stop burning least a king is dead. Here is a representation of all Buganda Clans and their respective role in this Kingdom since the time of immemorial as narrated by a royalist at this fire source.

Buganda Parliament

Proceed to the Kabaka’s Lake which was dug by the 52 Clans of Buganda on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II from 1885 – 1888. The Plan of the King was to construct a channel wide enough for him to travel by boat to Lake Victoria for Fishing and Swimming. This is the Largest Excavated Lake in Africa.

Later in the evening transfer to Ndere Cultural Centre with an en-route stop at Rubaga Cathedral a Roman Catholic Church which houses the remains of the first African Catholic Bishop and the first African Archbishop of Kampala Diocese. The church has glass windows with unique writings of the ‘Uganda martyrs’, at this Church is a spot where the king of Buganda wrote a letter inviting missionaries to Uganda. And Namirembe Cathedral, the Oldest Cathedral in Uganda Saint Paul’s Cathedral. It serves as the provincial Cathedral of the Church of Uganda and the diocesan Cathedral. The first diocese was founded in the Church of Uganda province in 1890.
